St. Louis Microbrewery Tour - Urban Chestnut Brewing Company - Midtown Brewery and Biergarten

We are visiting every St. Louis microbrewery to help highlight the variety, quality and fine spaces we have to enjoy a fresh beer in our fair city.

We stopped at the Urban Chestnut Midtown Brewery and Biergarten at 3229 Washington Avenue in the Covenant Blu/Grand Center Neighborhood. This is the first of two brewing locations from Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (UCBC) which opened in January, 2011.

It is is housed in a former 1920's automotive business. Here’s a pic from Isaac Sievers from November, 1932.

Bays visible from 1930’s photo. Historic renovation at its best.

The setting and renovation of this space into a brewery and beer garden is simply stunning. I can’t tell you how perfect this space is. It is simply perfect, inside and out.

The beer is traditional German style and is top shelf. Everything is crisp, clean, fresh and flavorful.

Zwickel Lager, Bushelhead Cider and O-Katz Octoberfest

The outdoor space is tranquil and reminds me of small town Illinois fish taverns from the 1970s/80s.

Me and Shannon play cards here. It is the chill UCBC location, the Grove one is loud, festive and way more popular. This one is a bit more subdued and quiet.

They book musicians to play outside and inside. There’s a duo, Josiah Joyce and Drew Weiss, that bring some of the best drums I’ve heard in St. Louis paired with looped jazzy/rock guitar at dignified volume that is reminiscent of Sea and Cake / Sam Prekop. Top shelf vibes with stellar percussion.

Kings in the Corner just heating up…

The beer menu is limited compared to the Grove location. They do not offer the amazing pizza, and the food offerings have evolved over the years. But, the latest offerings include smash burgers which are among the best in town.

This place is a fabulous setting and brewery. We love it here.

Check out the setting, perfectly St. Louis.

Enjoy folks, our beer scene is among the best in the country.

If you are fan of traditional German style beers and require a more subdued environment, try this place.
